Diabetes insipidus associated with an empty sella turcica.

چکیده
A patient with severe diabetes insipidus for 14 years was found to have an enlarged and eroded sella turcica with greatly reduced pituitary tissue on pneumoencephalography. It is suggested that the permanent diabetes insipidus may have resulted from growth of an intrasellar tumour, which subsequently infarcted spontaneously. Thyzoid and pituitary-adrenal function nevertheless remained good, which accounts for persistence of the diabetes insipidus.

Clinical Report Pre-existing undiagnosed central diabetes insipidus unmasked after renal transplantation
Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is characterized clinically by the presence of polyuria with the subsequent development of volume depletion and hypernatremia. In patients with dialysisdependent end-stage renal disease (ESRD), neither of these findings can be expressed due to the absence of renal function. A 59-year-old woman with anuric ESRD of unknown etiology had been on peritoneal dialysis ...

متن کاملPrevalence of empty sella syndrome
Background: The empty sella syndrome (ESS) is a neurological or pathologic finding in which sella turcica is devoid of pituitary tissue and the subarachnoid space extends into sella turcica, which is either primary or secondary as well as partial and complete. The widespread use of CT scans and MRIs today has made the ESS a common finding in imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pr...
متن کاملEnlargement of the sella turcica in pseudotumor cerebri.
OBJECT The sella turcica usually appears partially empty in MR images obtained from patients with chronic elevation of intracranial pressure. The authors measured the size of the sella turcica to determine if enlargement of the pituitary fossa explains the partially empty sella associated with pseudotumor cerebri. METHODS The medical records from 2005 to 2011 of a single neuro-ophthalmologist...
متن کاملPituitary insufficiency after penetrating injury to the sella turcica.
We report a 28-year-old male patient with a pituitary insufficiency after a simple fracture of the sella turcica. He was injured by a long nail that punctured the lower jaw. No fracture other than that of the sella turcica was detected. An endocrinological examination revealed both anterior and pituitary dysfunction and diabetes insipidus that continued for about two months.
